A Lesson in Connection by Lisa Sanford

What does a photograph of my scrapbooking friends at a crop and a photo of my kids meeting a Portuguese water dog have in common. Well… let me help you make the cultural connection. September is full of many cultural holidays and traditions. This September I sat down with my kids and discussed how the Latino culture intersected our lives this month since mid-month is the start of “Hispanic” Heritage Month. Did you know that the term Hispanic is primarily an American made term? So after consulting with a few Spanish speaking friends I’ve decided to use a more appropriate term, Latino.

Getting back to my original question regarding the correlation between the two photographs and Latino Heritage Month, I’d like to walk you through the connection. In the scrapbooking friends photo is a new found friend, Julianna Hudgins shared with us her Portuguese heritage after hearing about my new book, Ethnic Scrapbooking. Now to the dog…I’ve given in and decided to get a dog and my husband chose the pure breed Portuguese water dog (“Porties”). The kids have spent weeks learning about the heritage of this pure breed dog and I realized that our connection to Latino heritage in recent months is through meeting Julianna and the Porties. That… my friend is how we, an African-American family connected to the Latino culture in recent months. If you just take a moment to think beyond the surface I’m sure you too can come up with ways that you connect to the Latino/Hispanic culture this month in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month.
