Celebrating Thanksgiving with Lisa Sanford

I could go on and on about all of the negatives I feel about my beloved United States, but I won’t. I will tell you that I’d never really given Thanksgiving Day celebrations a second thought. I guess it’s because for my whole life and for many generations before me, we have always celebrated Thanksgiving Day. This year I am awestruck by the fact that we may be the only culture that dedicates an entire day to giving thanks to reflect on God’s goodness in our families and on our country. In the last few days, I’ve heard three people from other countries comment on what a unique event our Thanksgiving Day celebrations are. As divided as our country can seem to get at this time of the year, with the November elections, by Thanksgiving Day every industry in the country pulls together to honor our American tradition of sitting down for one day to give thanks.

This Thanksgiving, I challenge you to do a quick comparison at the dinner table as to what blessing we are afforded in our American culture that other cultures don’t have and vice versa. You say to yourself, “What could any other culture have that we don’t have?” Well, just recently I heard that Europeans enjoy a whopping average of 9 weeks of vacation that’s a benefit I’ve never heard of here in the United States. You probably need to go only as far as your local newspaper to glean some information on another country, so take an extra moment and really be thankful for all that living in your culture has to offer.
