Hispanic Heritage Month

by Lisa Sanford, Ethnic Scrapbooking

Autumn is in the air. Because I grew up in the hills of Southwestern Pennsylvania, fall is my favorite time of the year. I’ve had two children and got married in the fall (not in that order). It’s the time of the year when I try to spend as much time outdoors as possible.

Fortunately, living in a metropolitan city we are able to attend the many, many Hispanic Heritage Festivals that are held in the fall. This ethnic celebration is of particular importance to us this year because in my son’s kindergarten class there are a large number of Spanish speaking classmates and Jonathan is very interested in increasing his Spanish vocabulary.

Hispanic Heritage month starts September 15th and this is an excellent time to experience the foods, music, dance and clothing of the many Latin American countries that celebrate during this time period. After a month of fabulous photo opportunities at Hispanic festivals and celebrations, it’s time to go shopping. This year my scrapbook pages will focus on Spanish titles, background paper and three-dimensional items. Whether you live in a heavily Spanish populated area or not, this is a great time to focus on our Latino brothers and sisters and how our cultures intersect on a a daily basis, whether it’s through cable stations, food, at work or play. Take a moment to step out of your box and scrap your interactions with Spanish speaking countries.

Futbol Layout Speed Tip: I created this layout in under 20 minutes by following the formula on how to use patterned paper found on page 79 of Ali Edward’s new book, A Designer’s Eye For Scrapbooking with Patterned Paper.
